Landscape Maintenance Tip: Transform an area by learning how to trim and bring up overgrown shrubs using simple pruning techniques, the RIGHT way P1

Large shrubs, especially Viburnums, can get overgrown very quickly. Depending on the original design intention, you can easily bring the area back using the trimming techniques described and demonstrated in this video. I want to keep the height and shade they provide. So, in this video I’m going to clean up the base rather than cut these big shrubs back.

These viburnums were planted in an area where they were encouraged to get tall. The intention was to keep the base clean of new branches, just like one would any other small tree like Ligustrum or Crape Myrtle. In between each Viburnum ‘tree’ a croton was planted to give some foliage color pop. But the Viburnums had not been kept trimmed so I have a bit of a cleanup on my hands. What I’m going to do is called ‘bringing them up’ not cutting them back.

You’ll want to have a good pair of hand pruners and loppers. Get the heavier duty ones if you plan on pruning your shrubs, large or small. You won’t regret having the better tool.

For the hand pruners, I prefer bypass pruning shear and the Wolverine PR200 has served me well over the years. See link for more information. You’ll need to search online for where to purchase. You can also see options for loppers on this page. Just get a good set with a solid steel or aluminum handle.
